Kentucky Suboxone Doctors Near You
The opioid epidemic, it seems, leaves no state untouched. This is especially true with the state of Kentucky. In 2017 there were 1,160 opioid related deaths in the state of Kentucky. This is roughly 28 deaths per 100,000 people in the state. To put that into perspective, the national average is 14.6 per 100,000 people.
Like many states, Kentucky’s opioid problem started with prescription drugs. That is until 2017 when the most common drug associated with overdose because synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl. To provide insight into the explosion of fentanyl in Kentucky, here is a shocking statistic. From 2013 to 2017 synthetic opioid deaths increased more than ten times. With just 76 deaths in 2013 to 780 in 2017.
The question continues to be; Why such a large increase? Simply put, the use of Fentanyl has increased as a way to make opioids around the world more potent. The data shows that most people don’t start with street drugs, they start with prescribed opioids from a doctor and eventually, these drugs become far to expensive for them. Then they look to the streets to supply them with what they think is prescription drugs when they are simply pills laced with Fentanyl.
Suboxone® in Kentucky
Suboxone® or buprenorphine/naloxone which is the generic, has shown to be roughly 70% more effective than detox alone. This is according to this study. There is continual evidence of how buprenorphine, when coupled with counseling services and other modalities can lead to much higher success rates over the first 12 months of use. So, why is it, that we continue to see the opioid epidemic invade state like Kentucky? The answer is access to care.
As of December 13th 2019, there are less than 950 Suboxone doctors in Kentucky according to the US. Department of Health and Human Services website, SAMHSA which provides a locator of all doctors who have the DEA credentials to prescribe Suboxone and similar addiction medications in Kentucky. Although this may seem like a large number of providers in a single state, we states like New York with over 4,000 providers. However, the issue isn’t quantity of providers in Kentucky, it’s about access to these providers. First, simply having a DEA waiver to prescribe suboxone doesn’t mean a provider is using it. Many physicians simply get the waiver to get credit for continued education and never use it. Second, with rural populations, many people don’t have access to physicians who prescribe the medications they need. Those in Louisville or other border cities many not have a hard time, however, if you live south of Lexington, KY, it can be difficult to find care.
This is why Recovery Delivered is excited to enter the state of Kentucky and provide licensed suboxone doctors through our online clinic. No more driving to meet a provider or waiting in line at the pharmacy. Use your phone to enter your doctor meeting and we ship medication directly to your door.
