Kentucky Suboxone Doctors

Suboxone® or buprenorphine/naloxone  which is the generic, has shown to be roughly 70% more effective than detox alone.  This is according to this study.  There is continual evidence of how buprenorphine, when coupled with counseling services and other modalities can lead to much higher success rates over the first 12 months of use.  So, why is it, that we continue to see the opioid epidemic invade state like Kentucky? The answer is access to care.

As of December 13th 2019, there are less than 950 Suboxone doctors in Kentucky according to the US. Department of Health and Human Services website, SAMHSA which provides a locator of all doctors who have the DEA credentials to prescribe Suboxone and similar addiction medications in Kentucky.  Although this may seem like a large number of providers in a single state, we states like New York with over 4,000 providers.  However, the issue isn’t quantity of providers in Kentucky, it’s about access to these providers.  First, simply having a DEA waiver to prescribe suboxone doesn’t mean a provider is using it.  Many physicians simply get the waiver to get credit for continued education and never use it.  Second, with rural populations, many people don’t have access to physicians who prescribe the medications they need.  Those in Louisville or other border cities many not have a hard time, however, if you live south of Lexington, KY, it can be difficult to find care.
